Know Your Body
Diabetes is a condition where the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar (glucose). Over time, high blood sugar can damage blood vessels and nerves, affecting multiple organs.
Education
When the body cannot produce or properly use insulin, glucose builds up in the bloodstream instead of being used for energy. This leads to high blood sugar which, over time, causes damage throughout the body.
The immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Requires daily insulin therapy to survive.
The body doesn't make enough insulin or doesn't use it properly. Most common type in Ghana. Strongly linked to lifestyle factors. Can often be managed with diet, exercise, and medication.
Body Impact
High blood sugar damages arteries, increasing risk of heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure.
Diabetes can cause diabetic eye disease, leading to blurred vision and potential blindness if untreated.
Fluctuating sugar levels can affect mood, concentration, and emotional wellbeing significantly.
Nerve damage may reduce sensation, increasing risk of unnoticed injuries and dangerous infections.
Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney disease due to prolonged strain on the body's filtering systems.
High blood sugar increases risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and oral infections.
